Apple just announced their brand-new AR headset by the name of, “Apple Vision Pro” which promises to bring virtual experiences to a 3D environment all within a headset. That might sound like an average VR headset to the average person, but there’s more to it than that. To the point where you’ll be questioning the future of humanity, and how people will interact with the outside world.
Apple’s 2023 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) brought up several updates to their entire ecosystem lineup, but on a final surprise announcement they revealed their new innovative product that will change the future regardless of whether we’d like it or not. The Vision Pro is not just any regular headset that lets you see apps or games but closer, instead they take the approach of using the entire space around you to build the environment of the operating system and make it a futuristic view of multiple apps and games across your view.
While the Microsoft Holo Lens have already been unveiled earlier than Apple’s Vision Pro headset, Microsoft’s approach to hardware is severely lacking in comparison, and only available to businesses. The Apple Vision Pro’s target audience is the general public, businesses, and anyone you can think of. The starting price of $3,499 is definitely not approachable for the average consumer, but as a first of its kind product it is a price that can be understandable under such conditions.
So, where does dystopian come from? Technology and electronic devices currently have been adapting toward a future where everything will be assisted by technology and made to be as simple as possible. Artificial intelligence is an example of one of the products of modern technology, but for a device like this that’s only scratching the surface.
Apple’s Vision Pro is creating a standard for the industry and innovating on everything we can do entirely through a single electronic device. Allowing for people to socialize, produce content, and even live their lives through said device. Meta was attempting to achieve something similar with the metaverse, but in a way that people did not envision. The metaverse was built to fail with many seeing it as nothing more than a VRChat-like experience, while Apple is attempting to reach toward the general consumer with a nicer approach to replacing outside activities with their headset.
Why go to a movie theater when you can use your AR headset to replicate the experience at home? Why work at a building far from home when you can just use your AR headset to manage all your work from home? Why go to a sports event when you can keep track of all stats, see players move in real time, and keep up with everything about the event from the headset.
The examples provided are just the tip of the iceberg for what has become possible with the headset, what can be replaced with it, and why the thought of dystopia might come to your mind as you realize how greatly the future can change with devices like this. It may not seem like much to a few people currently, but the Apple Vision Pro is simply the start of a new generation of technology and human life as a whole.
